Rigorous citizenship education should be an entitlement

In this video Don Rowe argues that citizenship education should remain a statutory entitlement for all young people, and that done properly it has as much intellectual rigour as traditional curriculum subjects.

“[Young people] are entitled to know what kind of society they are growing up in, they’re entitled to know what their rights are, they’re entitled to know what duties are placed on them as citizens.”

“There is as much intellectual rigour in this subject, and should be, as English, or as science or history: because it’s based on politics, it’s based on law, it’s based on ethics … and all of these are respectable academic subjects which come together to provide the basis of importrant elements of knowledge for students.”

Views expressed on this blog are not necessarily those of the Citizenship Foundation.
